When did Medi-Cal expand its coverage?

On Behalf of | Jan 3, 2023 | Medi-Cal and Long Term Care Planning

The Medi-Cal program has long provided assistance for those who need it most. In the beginning, it focused on children, women who were pregnant and generally on family units. It was important for these individuals to have the support and security of the Medi-Cal program.

However, it was eventually seen that this could be beneficial for other individuals as well. Specifically, California expanded it so that low-income adults would also be eligible, along with families. This happened on the 1st of January in 2014, meaning that the law has now covered this many individuals for almost a decade.

Is there a cost?

There can be a low premium for some individuals. For example, families in some situations can be charged a maximum of $39 per month, or $13 per child.  But the program is free to many people, and there are no premiums that they have to pay at all.

Additionally, some people may be concerned about having to pay a deductible or a co-pay. For most individuals who are on this plan, neither of these will be required. This sets it apart from other types of coverage. For example, most types of insurance coverage that people buy are going to require a deductible, so many people find that their insurance isn’t even being billed for anything and they’re just paying out of pocket. But somebody in the Medi-Cal program likely does not have to worry about that because they won’t have these additional costs.

How can you access these benefits?

You can see how valuable this program is, and it is important for you to understand all the steps to take to utilize it.
